On Thursday, October 11, the team had their last conference tournament, marking the end of their season. The Gull Lake boys’ tennis team has been out on the courts almost every day since August for practices, matches and tournaments. Junior Ben Whitaker, a varsity tennis player, reflected on his tennis season.
“I played third doubles this year. I think my partner and I started off playing pretty well, but we really improved throughout the season from practices and playing real matches,” Whitaker said
Whitaker plays doubles, but he said that he would prefer to be a singles player.
“If you play singles, you get to make way more shots, and there’s much more freedom around the court,” Whitaker said.
On Thursday, October 11, the tennis team had an all day tournament where doubles played at Portage Central and singles played at Portage Northern for their last match.
“My partner and I played Zeeland East and we played pretty well, but they were really good and they beat us in 2 sets,” Whitaker said.
Overall Gull Lake lost a lot of their matches, but most of them were really close. 1st and 2nd doubles won their first matches and the singles teams had a few wins as well.
