The Gull Lake chapter of the National Honor Society will be busy in the month of December. The group has to big events planned for the month; both involve students and can involve their parents as well.
The first event is the Toys for Tots fundraiser, starting December 3 and going through December 17. The goal of this campaign is as follows: “To deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.”
The event takes place in first block, where students can bring in toys and drop them off in a box. At the end of the two weeks the toys will be counted and one class will win. However, no matter who wins, the ultimate goal is to raise the most amount of toys for the cause. Senior NHS member Jeremy Chang helped to coordinate the Toys for Tots event.
“This event will really show how caring our students can be towards the community, especially if we can get some competition going between classrooms,” he said.
The second event is the first annual National Honor Society Chili Cook-off. It will take place Sunday, December 9 from 11 am to 1 p.m. It is open to not only students, but the general public. The cost is $5 to eat. Anyone can enter a dish of chili into the competition, and prizes will be given out after the attendees vote on their favorites. The proceeds of this event go to the Bright Holiday Program, a program that the Gull Lake Community Area Volunteer sponsors during the winter months. Families in need are provided with clothing, food, educational toys, and miscellaneous household items. We work with local businesses and individuals along with school and church contacts to acquire and distribute items that meet the needs of these families.
If you are able to attend or help either event in any way, be sure to do so, to benefit the Gull Lake community.
