All of you know how the Gull Lake High School system works. In summer break, before school starts, you choose your classes. School starts at 7: 30 every morning and ends at 2:20. You have the same classes everyday for one trimester, or even more. That’s a short summary of the Gull Lake High School system.
I knew that the school system in America works different than the German school system before I came to America. If I wouldn’t have known about the differences before, I guess I would probably have been confused.
In Germany you don’t get to choose your classes. The school gives you your classes, and there is no chance to change these classes. Also, you have around 10 to 13 classes per week. Your schedule is different everyday. Of course it’s the same every Monday, every Tuesday and so on but your week is a mix of different classes.
School also starts mostly between 8 and 9 o’clock in the morning and ends between 12:30 and 5 o’clock in the afternoon but that also depends on your schedule.
One fact, what I think it is really sad, is that there are no fun classes in Germany.
Except you count gym and art as a fun class. So, your week is full of math, English, German, history and so on.
Most people say that’s a good thing because than the students automatically learn more in school. I don’t think so. I think sometimes you need a break in between hard classes, something like Storytelling or US History Thru Film. Because my opinion is, students just learn when they want to learn something, and when you have hard classes all day, you don’t want to learn anymore after a few weeks.
Today is December 19th, that means Christmas eve is there in 5 days. I wish you all a nice Christmas and enjoy you’re break from school.
