Pictures of Spain Elementary-Middle School in Detroit, Michigan have circled around media because of the terrible, hazardous conditions that Detroit students are forced to learn in. With mold growing on ceilings, a musty smell throughout the school, an unfinished gym which means the children have to play in hallways, warped wooden floors, roof damage, and much more, the students and teachers of several schools in Detroit are in desperate need of new or updated facilities.

The teachers at Spain wanted to bring awareness to the environment that they had to teach in and have said multiple times that they believe their students deserved better. Earlier this year, all of the teachers staged a “sickout,” causing the school to be closed for two days. CNN, as well as many other news coverage outlets, posted an article about Spain Elementary-Middle School and its teachers, students and unsafe conditions.

The teachers were looking for help and wanted to gain support, and they received just that when daytime talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres, saw the viral pictures. DeGeneres partnered up with Lowe’s Home Improvement store and donated  $500,000 to Spain Elementary-Middle School, her biggest donation ever. With this money they can purchase new technology, materials, fund renovations, and provide salaries for additional staff.

Ellen DeGeneres also got famous pop singer, Justin Bieber, to join in on the donations. He promised that for

every ticket sold for his concert at Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit on April 25, he will donate a dollar, which will all add up to be about $25,000.

DeGeneres also started a GoFundMe fundraiser to raise even more money for Spain Elementary-Middle School, where anyone can donate which has raised about $75,000 so far.

“I have always loved Ellen and watching her show; this just shows how generous she can be with her wealth and fame,” junior Claire Halpin said.
