Kanye West has always been an interesting character in the music, entertainment, and recently fashion industries. He’s known for his large ego, outrageous comments, and his connection to the Kardashians. West was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but grew up in Chicago after his parents divorced. He left college to pursue a musical career, which has led him to the success that he has today. Kanye West is well versed in both music and fashion, and passionately shares both of them with his fans.
West has created and produced eight studio albums. His very first album, The College Dropout, was produced in 2004 and was awarded a Grammy for Best Rap Album. The following year he released Late Registration. In 2007, he released Graduation, and in 2008, he released 808’s and Heartbreak. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released in 2010. In 2011, Kanye West collaborated with Jay-Z on their album Watch the Throne, which was a successful album for both of them.
In 2013, West produced his most poorly received album, Yeezus, which sold under 800,000 physical copies. This year, West created significant anticipation for his most recent album, The Life of Pablo, by dropping hints as to the album name, which fans then tried to predict based off of the initials TLOP. The Life of Pablo, with its smooth sounds, is a sharp contrast to Yeezus, which was filled with harsh sounds and an aggressive message.
Despite his massive success in music and fashion, Kanye West is not always easy to like. He is known for interrupting Taylor Swift in the middle of her MTV Video Music Awards acceptance speech, announcing that she should not have won and “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” He is also known for other timeless egotistical quotes like “‘I am God’s vessel. But my greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live.” West makes numerous comments about his superiority to others musically, and in general.
West also goes through phases of being very active on Twitter, where he engages in offensive arguments and targets very specific people. He frequently rants over Twitter and apologizes later on. West is often viewed as an egotistical child by many, yet his music remains popular.
West took to Twitter to announce updates on his album and his creative process. He is an artist who has a certain vision in his mind, and he strives for perfection. The name of the album was publicly changed four times. It was originally titled So Help Me God, then it was changed to SWISH, WAVES, and finally concluded on The Life of Pablo.
The Life of Pablo has been much more successful than Yeezus in terms of reviews, but because it has not been released on anything other than the application Tidal, there have been no sales. The album is jumbled, lighthearted yet personal, and the sound is almost in complete opposition to his less successful album Yeezus.
West described his album as “a gospel album with a whole lot of cursing in it,” which is mostly accurate. The first track on the album, “Ultra Light Beams,” builds up the album, with a gospel feeling to it. It is probably the most popular track on the album, originally intended to be the final track. The track is seen as a reflection of West’s life.
Other notable tracks on the album include “Real Friends,” “Waves,” and “No More Parties in L.A.” The tracks on the album almost seem as if they could be on completely separate albums, but it works for Kanye. The album switches from a light flowing sound to darker tones. Kanye West may not be a role model, but he has once again produced a wonderful album.
