Over the past weekend Gull Lake DECA took over 40 students to Detroit, Michigan for the State DECA Conference. The students stayed at the Renaissance Hotel in the General Motors building on the Detroit River. Arriving Friday night, several students who were in written events attended those events and were done for the weekend while the role plays and presentations for most were set for Saturday. This built up the anxiety and pressure for the coming competitors.

As Saturday morning arrived, it was madness at the Cobo Center where the conference was being held. Thousands of students and advisors from all over Michigan scurried around, ensuring to be at the right spot at the right time. As the day dragged on more and more students returned to the hotel skeptical of their results and how their judge reacted to their presentations. To calm the nerves all the competitors, the chaperones and Gull Lakes DECA advisor and Business teacher, Bree Martin, fled to the streets of Detroit to find a classic restaurant and end the night on a high note.

Sunday morning was the awards ceremony, and the day began with much anticipation and high nerves. As the conductors began to rapidly list of hundreds of names and events some hearts were filled with joy while others disappointed with their results already began to talk on how they could improve for the next year. Gull Lake brought home seven internationally qualified competitors: Taylor Gripentrog (State Officer), Abigail Stark, Rachel Rohlwing, Elizabeth Mellema, Carolyn Mellema, Jordyn Geik and Stosh Tustin. These few with compete in Anaheim, California in May, representing Gull Lake and our community.
