Gull Lake baseball begins again

As the snow melts and the grass turns a little greener, Gull Lake baseball is set to begin again, this season with many questions to see how a new coach, new senior leadership, and overall a completely new feel for the program will affect the team’s success.

In his first season as head coach, Reggie Walters has already started to gel with this year’s baseball candidates during tryouts. On Monday and Wednesday the varsity hopefuls arrived to school at 5:30 in the morning and began practice. As the tryouts go on, players become more and more comfortable in front of the coaches and the coaches get a better feel for who will make the team.

“I think it’s pretty nerve racking to tryout in front of the coaches if you’ve never tried out for a team before,” junior Cade Stanton said. “I think all the freshman are a little nervous but for those of us who have been a part of this program for three or four years now, we’re pretty comfortable.”

The tryouts consist of lots of hitting, fielding, pitching and catching.

“I think the best part of tryouts are getting to see all the coaches again,” Stanton said. “We don’t see them for eight months out of the year so it’s always good to get to talk to them again.”

This year’s program has a few unfamiliar faces including two new coaches that will be in charge of the JV team.

“Coach Bennecke and coach Belanger are both pretty cool,” Stanton said. “As varsity guys we haven’t gotten a whole lot of time to really talk with them but they came up to most of us and introduced themselves and they just seem like they’re happy to be here so that can only help us.”

Cuts will be made on Friday after school and official baseball practice will begin on Monday.
