DRAW Buckets draw successful donations

0 votes

The week of September 25, Student Senate distributed DRAW buckets for each department. Once collected, these supplies were sent to the DRAW (Disaster Relief at Work) organization to then be distributed to the areas affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

These buckets were meant to collect cleaning and family items. Each department received two buckets, one family bucket and one cleaning bucket, for which students were encouraged to donate supplies.

DRAW is an organization that sends aid to areas that have suffered from some form of disaster, whether it be an F-5 tornado in Oklahoma or a fertilizer plant explosion in Texas. DRAW’s goal is to get to areas that have suffered some sort of disaster, such as flooding, as soon as possible. When Little Rock, Arizona was flooded from an onslaught of storms, DRAW trucks were able to respond within a mere 24 hours with cleaning supplies and tools to aid those lucky enough to survive.

Items such as scouring pads, scrub brushes and liquid laundry detergent went into the bucket designated for cleaning supplies. Meanwhile materials such as nail clippers, razors, and soap were put into the family bucket.

“We got buckets full of wash clothes and ropes and toilet paper and a lot of stuff. It was a really good turn out, for it being such a last minute thing,” said Student Senate President Sarah Pelyhes.

The Student Senate looks to possibly donate to DRAW in the future and continues to look for opportunities to help those who survive these natural disasters.

This is my first year on the Newspaper staff. I have been wanting to be involved in it for a while, but I have never had room in my schedule. Although I am more into the photography aspect, I am also excited to write an assortment of articles.
