On May 27, 2017, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. opened up the World of Avatar in Animal Kingdom. The World of Avatar includes two rides, the Flight of Passage and the Na’vi River Ride.

The Flight of Passage is a virtual reality ride that creates the illusion that you are riding on the back of a banshee, a large bird like creature and aerial predator native to the world of Pandora. The ride includes water misting and lots of wind to help bring the illusion to life.

For the past five months the lines for the Flight of Passage has had an average of a three hour wait. Although the wait is long, it is worth it, not to mention that there are several different ways to beat the wait, such as using Early Magic Hours, going close to closing time or using Fastpasses.

The line starts off in the Na’vi forest and makes its way inside of a mountain that turns into a warehouse. Once it’s your turn, you are assigned a room and a number to stand on. While inside of the room, you are given a rundown of life in the Pandora Realm and assigned an Avatar to live vicariously through on the ride. After everyone in your group has an Avatar, you are herded into yet another room where everyone sits on a motorcycle-like seat and is forced to put on leg and back restrains along with their virtual reality glasses.

As the ride begins, you are taken through the Pandora Realm while on the back of a banshee. There are several different simulations that the ride puts you through and along with the vibrant colors the virtual reality includes creates a great illusion of the ride. The motorcycle like seat in which you are riding on moves back and forth creating the complete fluid yet jerky movements that a banshee goes through. The ride shows you all parts of the Na’vi world as they are seen from the point of view of an actual Avatar.

The ride is worth the long wait  and truly makes you feel like you are flying on the back of a banshee. Everyone has high expectations for the Flight of Passage and are primarily talking about the Avatar Realm when discussing Disney World, but the ride is fantastic and deserves the high attention.
