The competitive cheer season starts in November and usually ends in February, but cheer is year round. Wolverton stretches, works splits and tumbles to stay in shape and maintain flexibility.

Competitive cheer is more rigorous than sideline season. Sidelines are about supporting other sports, but competitive is cheerleader’s turn to shine.

Sophomore Grace Wolverton is about to enter her second year of competitive cheer for Gull Lake. Wolverton is a base which means she gets to lift, throw and catch the flyers.

“It’s more hardcore and a lot more fun because of how much passion has to go into it,” Wolverton said.

Some people tend to discredit cheer, but according to Wolverton, it is a real sport and more preparation goes into routines than realized.

“Practice, practice, practice,” Wolverton said. “We are working very hard, but we have to make it look easy, it’s a combination of weightlifting, gymnastics and screaming your lungs out.”

But it’s not all work and no play. Tiring practices and late nights provide the perfect opportunity for inside jokes and bonding.

“If cheer isnt a sport, how come I can pick up girls and you can’t,” is one example Wolverton gave of a cheer joke.

My name is Ravelle Johnson, I went to Albion Public Schools until 7th grade.  After Albion Public Schools was shut down, I  transferred to Marshall Middle School. I spent my 7th and 8th years there. My mother found a new job in Battle Creek, and we looked around for new schools.  Gull Lake offered the best education system and freshman year, I attended Gull Lake High School.
