On Sunday, January 14, the Southwest Michigan Ballroom Dance Club will host a ballroom style dance at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art (KIA). This event includes dance lessons provided by Kalamazoo DanceSport for the first hour and then free dancing for the remaining two and a half hours.
This event is a monthly occurrence. With each month the attendants are taught a different type of dance. Those who attended last month were taught the Quickstep, while those who will come this month will be taught the Rumba.
“The Quickstep has not been taught in several years and we like to offer variety. It is not considered a beginners dance…” treasurer/secretary of the organization, Pam Holton said.
Normally, guests wear casual business attire, but jeans are also acceptable.
“Shoes with rubber soles are very hard to dance in, so a smooth-soled shoe is best,” Holton said.
The music provided was a mixture of pop and oldies. There is no age limit for these monthly dances, as some high school students have attended in the past. This is a monthly event with a different type of dance taught at each event.
This is my first year on the Newspaper staff. I have been wanting to be involved in it for a while, but I have never had room in my schedule. Although I am more into the photography aspect, I am also excited to write an assortment of articles.
