Fortnite: Battle Royale has been one of the hottest games of 2017 and start of 2018. People all over the globe and from all walks of life have centered around the game that has brought back a feeling of middle school Call of Duty. This free to play game has hit Gull Lake like a storm.

In Fortnite: Battle Royale, players compete to survive. Dropped from a battle bus into a map with many cities, which are hubs for early action and dispersed loot throughout the map, players then compete, using varying strategies to be the last one standing. Players can play solo, with a teammate or with a squad of up to four teammates.

“I like playing solo because it’s a lot easier and I don’t have to worry about other people messing up and causing me to lose,” senior Cade Stanton said.

Fortnite has brought many players together to fight for the top spot finish and bragging rights to all their friends. A number one finish is found through the use of many different skills. One must be able to shoot, strategize their loot and build structures in order to outplay the other players in the game.

“I like playing Fortnite with the boys because we all get on and have a ton of fun. It’s a really lit game that I think everyone should play,” senior Kaleb Clous said.

Another way that Fortnite has entranced many at Gull Lake is through the use of social media. Many students take to Twitter and Instagram and share funny photos and memes about the game.

“Whenever anyone wins they put it on their snapchat story to make sure everyone knows that they’re the alpha at the game,” senior Derik Smith said.

Occasionally, players will turn to Youtube or other streaming services to watch self proclaimed professional gamers play the game. They will watch tutorial videos and simple tips and tricks videos on how to become the master Fortnite player.

“I like watching Fortnite videos because it helps me see things that I can do while I play and helps me get better,” Clous said.

Fortnite has recently released a major update that included many new cities and loot spots for players to explore and battle. This update to the game has brought a lot more attention as the new dynamics have  interesting twists to playing styles.

“I like the new map way better because now all the good players go to the same spot and eliminate each other and that gives the other players a chance,” Stanton said.

With the game recently being released in 2017, Fortnite is expected to have a long life in the minds of gamers for a while.
