On February 23, Gull Lake hosted the Spartans from Lakeview. Not only was the game the annual Sno Court game, but the senior players were honored on their Senior Night. Coming into the game, the Blue Devils were angry after the last matchup with the Spartans that ended with only one Lakeview player shaking hands after the game.
Starting the game off, Gull Lake came out attacking. Both teams went back and forth trading buckets and stayed even throughout the first quarter. Gull Lake stepped up on the defensive end and held the lead for the entire quarter. The score at the end of the quarter was 21-15, Gull Lake up.
Starting the second quarter, Gull Lake pushed the ball trying to extend their lead. But lacking a little bit on the defensive end, the Blue Devils couldn’t extend the gap. At the end of the quarter, junior guard Devon Prather pushed the ball up the floor and got a last second layup in before the buzzer. Gull Lake was up at halftime 35-26.
Coming out of halftime, Gull Lake was determined. Shooting the ball well and getting stops on defense, they increased the lead and fired up the crowd. The score at the end of the third quarter was 56-33.
Starting the fourth quarter, Lakeview came out and made a small run to cut into the lead the Blue Devil’s had. The referees seemed to be trigger happy at the end of the game as a technical was awarded to junior Devon Prather for telling his teammates what defense they were playing. This fueled the Blue Devils even more. A second technical was awarded to senior Rob Flynn. The refs didn’t deter the Blue Devils and they took care of business for the win. The final score was 71-52.
“This game was a really good win for us. We needed it to keep up our momentum going into Districts. We were really motivated by what they did the last time they played us,” senior Dominik Mastromatteo said.
The Blue Devils now have six wins on the season and look to carry momentum into their District game again against Battle Creek Lakeview. This matchup will be on Monday, March 5.
