The Gull Lake boys’ varsity basketball team played its last game of the season against Lakeview on Monday, narrowly missing out on a district win.

The game started out well for Gull Lake, playing strong offense and high pressure defense to take an early lead. Gull Lake carried the lead throughout the first half and went into halftime with a near 10 point lead.

Gull Lake came out strong to start the second half, maintaining its stable lead throughout the quarter, going into the fourth in a comfortable position.

Early in the fourth Gull Lake struggled, allowing Lakeview to tie it up and take a two point lead at one point.

Gull Lake stepped up when it mattered though and fought back to regain the lead, late in the fourth.

Gull Lake had a three point lead with nine seconds and the ball. Gull Lake tried to move the ball up the court and turned the ball over, giving possession to Lakeview with seconds left on the clock.

Lakeview inbounded the ball and were faced by hard contention by Gull Lake. With less than a second left number 22 on Lakeview passed the ball to the corner where an open Lakeview player stood.

As the clock ran out the Lakeview player got the shot off and time seemed to go in slow motion as the ball was in the air. The ball bounced on the rim and sat there, raising the tension.

The shot rolled in off of the rim and tied up the game, sending it to overtime.

In overtime the game stayed close, with both teams struggling to score. Lakeview drove to the basket with little time left and hit a layup, giving them a one point lead.

Gull Lake had mere seconds to try and win the game, they inbounded the ball and couldn’t get to the hoop, settling for a three point shot that was just short, giving the win to Lakeview. A bitter ending to the boys’ basketball season.
