Debate team reaches semifinals

The Debate Team at Gull Lake High School reached the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The team takes national topics―statements formed by the National Speech and Debate Association which are worded as resolutions―and prepares arguments for both both sides of the resolution. Tournaments are held every two months, with different resolutions each time. The resolution of this tournament was over the United Nations’ Law of the Sea, with next month’s being over the price of pharmaceuticals.

“Debate is a great way to improve your speaking and writing skills, as well as critical thinking skills,” GLHS Debate teacher and adviser Sheila Wood said.

The team at Gull Lake meets every weekend. They have a winning track record at these tournaments, and last time was no different; amongst its placements, one of the debaters from Gull Lake even won the Best Speaker Award.

Despite the fact that the majority of the members are relatively young and inexperienced, the team has been successful, with freshman Noah Larson and team President Hailey Shoeman making it all the way to the semi-finals despite this being Larson’s first debate.

“It’s very good at helping people to see that things are not so much black or white, as grey,” Wood said. “They are not so much as right or wrong, as ‘right’ and ‘more right,’ and debate is a great way for people to learn that and become much more skilled at argumentation.”
