Gull Lake Quiz Bowl finds success in its starting roots

One of Gull Lake’s most recently successful clubs is also one of its smallest. Quiz Bowl has been a club at the high school for over 10 years and continues to find success at competitions. Once the first overall club in the region in 2006, Gull Lake is again performing at a high level in competitions.

This year’s Quiz Bowl club has come together so well  that it has been invited to participate at the state competition on April 12 and 13 at Michigan State University.

To prepare for these upcoming competitions, the Quiz Bowl club has met after school in cindy Leder’s classroom on Mondays throughout December to practice and hone its trivia skills.

“We have different packets from different seasons, so we usually run through those in a Jeopardy style match in teams,” senior Kaleight Belz said.

Competition season usually starts in January and goes through February.

In competitions, a team consists of four members that will participate in four to five matches on the night of a competition. Two teams from different schools will then face one another during a match. During the match, a reader will announce the “toss-up” question, and then a member will buzz in to answer from there. Buzzing-in is the main feature of the club, which allows for members of a team to interrupt the question being asked if one already knows the answer. Such a feature allows for a member’s intelligence, confidence and adrenaline to take over.

“Toss-up” questions, mentioned earlier, are answered individually and allow for a team to gain a three-part bonus question. These bonus questions allow for members to work together to find an answer but are generally more difficult to get correct in the process. More information on competitions and Quiz Bowl can be found here.

The nature of Gull Lake’s team allows for members to get to know one another fairly well and forge new friendships.

“It’s very laid back, and there’s a very easy camaraderie between teammates,” Belz said.

Like many other clubs and sports at Gull Lake, friendships blossom in these family-like environments.

Another aspect of the team that attracts new students to join is the learning of new information.

“I love the trivia, and Quiz Bowl is a fun way to explore that,” Belz said.

The fast-paced buzzer club covers an array of topics from literature and science to popular culture and world events, allowing for students to better understand both modern and traditional topics.

Gull Lake’s Quiz Bowl team this year consists of senior member Kaleigh Belz and four other freshman members.

“Last year I was worried that we weren’t going to have enough members to field a team, so I was really glad that at the beginning of this year some of the freshman decided to try it out,” Belz said.

It’s these talented young freshman that have been the catalyst for a successful Gull Lake Quiz Bowl season this year.

“I think the freshmen we had this year have really amazing potential, and I hope they go on to win big in the next few years,” Belz said.

Under the leadership of advisers from teachers Cindy Leder and Karl Anderson, the Gull Lake Quiz Bowl club looks to be well set-up for future success as the team continues to grow and gain experience through competitions.

About

I’m a senior at Gull Lake High School, and this is my first year on staff. I enjoy writing about our school sports’ programs and other areas as well. Having a deep interest and enjoyment in our English classes at Gull Lake, I’ve decided to pursue a different side of writing by doing newspaper and hope to provide entertaining articles for our viewers. Being involved in sports such as cross country and track, while also being invested to clubs such as Debate and Model UN, I write about topics that affect both myself and classmates.
