Officer Kelm talks about Gull Lake safety

Safety in schools is not just protecting students and staff from violence, it’s having students safe from bullying, harassment, and substance abuse. You may not notice what work goes into keeping students and staff members safe, and a lot of work goes into it.

There are many people involved in deciding what is best for the school involving safety. Officer Adam Kelm is very involved in making these decisions. Officer Adam is Gull Lake’s district officer.

As many know, there is work being done on all buildings, and more work in the future. This year, all buildings are improving cameras, doors, and adding bulletproof glass. Bulletproof glass is very important for Officer Adam. He says in regards to a school shooting, “they [past school shooters] shot out the glass” which makes easy access to the inside.

Officer Kelm also has future plans for the school district. He wants to add what’s called a “Raptor check-in.” This check-in looks for sex offenders and custody violations to keep unwanted visitors out. He also wants to get more hallway monitors to really assure the hallways are safe.

He also mentions that there should be more counseling for students. His main goal is to prevent rather than respond. By getting more counseling, students can go to someone and get help to prevent responding to an issue.
