The Pros and Cons of the SAT

The week of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, can be a stressful time for high school students. The SAT and other standardized testing is considered very important for students to take. Because it is such an extensive test that all students are required to take, there are lots of pros and cons.

Some positives about the SAT is the standardization aspect that it adds to the school.  The SAT can be good for those who have lower grades in school. A high SAT score can help with more competitive schools. This test, although mysterious in the beginning, is a learnable test. There are ways that students can learn this test to greatly help their end score. One last positive is that this is good practice for future tests.

Some cons about the SAT is that it is very stressful for students. For those who naturally do well in school, they don’t stress. For those who don’t, practicing and studying is very important to get a good score. Race and biases are associated with the SAT. This is one of the most controversial aspects of the SAT.

Gull Lake High School juniors are taking the SAT on April 14. Following in that week they have to take the ACT, and the M-Step.

All in all, the SAT is a good way to test the students academic success, but they still have some improving to do to make it more equal and less bias.
